An Interesting Post On the ROCK-ART@ASU.EDU Archives on Gordon's Panel Has Been Brought To Our Attention.

Click here to read the post by a 1998 MA Art History student at Virginia Commonwealth University. These archives probably aren't supposed to be publically accessible so if security is added and this archive becomes protected, click here to read a copy of the posting.

There are a lot of interesting things mentioned in this posting. One is another verification that Gordon Smith discovered the site, brought it to the attention of the NPS, and also is responsible for discovering some of the pigments used in the paintings. Second, it seems that quite a bit of research has been done on the site. The posting lists several articles that have been written and then makes the assumption that these articles should "satisfy most curiosity". There are plenty of people not privy to academic circles who are incredibly knowledgable about rock art, archaeology, and prehistoric art and who would love more information than this about such a site. Lastly, a lot of the research materials seem to be held by the GRCA Archaeology department, and are not available without research permission, as this site is categorized as a class III site. We couldn't agree more that this site should be protected, but we totally disagree that the public should be denied access to valuable research information, and the location of the site, because of this status. There must be a better way to conserve our national treasures than this.
